Pro Wargame League TM

What do we expect of our Officers? Integrity and Character are 2 important foundation stones of leadership. We expect to hold our Officers to high levels of behavior in these areas. With cash on the line, we need to ensure that the game is handled fairly. We have a penalty system in place. An officer suspected of cheating can be brought up on charges to an independent review board. Upon review, the board will determine a penalty. Depending on severity, these penalties could involve the umpire’s disruption to your command, a fine, forfeiture of your winnings, expulsion from the battle and possibly even the league.
We expect our players to behave with respect and empathy. We are trying to build a fun atmosphere and an online community. We are not here to prove how great we are to everyone and show off our snappy, clever comebacks. We are here to learn and have fun. We do expect a serious competition and recognize that this can lead to some heated exchanges at times. We expect that these discussions be kept at the professional / performance level, not the personal attack and gutter level. In short, we expect Officers and Gentlemen.
We don't want to dwell on this too much but here is what it all boils down to. It is easier to detect than you think. It also takes a lot more effort and energy to attempt than you think. Trying to figure out / anticipate the enemy and run your own army is already a daunting task. Trying to cheat and cover your tracks will quickly over load your mental and time capacity. Even if successful, any advantage you might gain by cheating will be quickly offset by lost focus on strategy, tactics and communications. Any advantage to be gained is slight. The risked penalties are much more severe. Not very good "pot odds" for your bet.
Note also that this is not a US court of law. Justice is swift here. You don't have to be guilty of cheating, just suspected of it. You are not innocent until proven guilty and the Board doesn't need evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. They just need to vote against you.
Here you will find the current roster of commissioned officers in our league. Their listing includes their current statistics and their biographical background profile. We list them in alphabetical order.

Motto: Hit Hard & Move Fast! -No Fear
Occupation: Insurance
Gaming Since: 1978
First Game: The Russian Campaign AH
Favorite Game: East Front -Columbia Games ... and Poker.
Favorite Book: Art of War -Sun Tzu
Favorite Leader: Patton Hands Down!
Favorite Quote: Therefore, the best warfare strategy is to attack the enemy's plans. -Sun Tzu
Command Style/Philosophy: My job as commander is to determine the overall strategy and communicate this effectively to the sub commands. After that, I like to get out of the way and let my Corps Commanders do their job... unless they need me.
Fighting Style/Philosophy: Above all else, I like to maintain the initiative. If I don't have the strength to carry the fight, I at least like to control the tempo and location. Speed can make up for a lot of mistakes and weaknesses. I like my independence and freedom as a commander. Don't pick me to launch the fatal frontal assault or hold the static defense. If I don't like the terms I have to fight with, I will seek to re-shuffle the deck and fight on new terms.
Other Hobbies: Motorcycles, Music and Martial Arts.
Enjoys Most: What I enjoy most is the chance to learn and try out new theories. In addition, a chance to beat General Drew. Man is he tough!

Favorite Quote: All murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.
Command Style/Philosophy: I am not a micro-manager. Given an order I will implement as I best see fit. Having given an order I expect subordinates to adapt to the ever-changing situation on the battlefield. After all, the best laid plans aren't worth the paper their written on after the lead starts flying.
Fighting Style/Philosophy: Get there "firstest" with the "mostest." Overwhelm the enemy at their weakest point and exploit, exploit, exploit. I am cautious early on but when I have committed to a course of action I will follow-through. Do not give the enemy time to adapt. The exception would be, "Never interrupt your enemy while he's making a mistake. That's bad manners." (attributed to Napoleon).

Favorite Quote: In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is. -- Yogi Berra
Command Style/Philosophy: I like to point subordinates in the right direction and let them make their own decisions. The closer the decision-maker is to the problem, the better/faster he will be in devising and implementing a plan. The commander's job is to understand the overall situation and to make sure each part of the army is working together to achieve the desired result. To that end, I prefer to keep my subordinates informed about the overall flow of the battle, where the units on our side are and what they are doing, what I would like for each unit to do in the future and what doing that will accomplish. Within those broad parameters, I trust my subordinates to maximize their opportunities for success without too much input from me.

Favorite Leader: Nathan Bedford Forrest
Favorite Quote: His pointed speech to Bragg when passed over for a higher command.
Command Style/Philosophy: I have definite objectives and plans for every Corps, on down to brigades. As commander, I want my plans to be followed, yet with the wisdom to take a potent advantage of the slightest error from our opponents. The larger the error the greater the advantage.
I want to seek to destroy, wreck, break the opposing army, from that, any and all objectives are more easily grasped.
Fighting Style/Philosophy: From my motto: Punish errors swiftly, boldly. A commander will always make at least one error in judgment. It is imperative to be in a place to take advantage of that error and punish them for it.
Keep the initiative, and track the strengths and weaknesses of various positions along the line. Hit them hard, and in places unexpected. Drive forward, or if needed, step back, allowing a trap to be sprung. Do this with fierce determination. Vanquish those who oppose you.
Other Hobbies: Reading, primarily history, writing, running and hitting the gym.
Enjoys Most: So much...the thought and detail that is put into the rules. The fact that it is a subset of the gaming industry. It connects me to my roots, and some of my earliest memories.

Favorite Game: Diplomacy
Favorite Book: The Battle for North America by Francis Parkman
Favorite Leader: Napoleon
Favorite Quote: Fortune favors the bold.
Command Style/Philosophy:
Focus on the heart of the matter and not get bogged down in the
details. Tell your subordinates the big picture as you see it and what you
want them to accomplish as part of an overall coordinated plan. Then allow
them to figure out the how. Do not micro-manage. I do not expect
big victories, but I also do not expect big defeats. If the opportunity
arises and my officers see a chance for a bold thrust that can reap huge
benefits at a calculated risk, then by all means go for it. It can be
related to a football game. Ball control, no turnovers or giving up big
plays. No plan is or ever will be perfect. Ours need not be.
We just have to make fewer mistakes that our opponents.
Fighting Style/Philosophy:
Always look for the indirect approach. Plan ahead and force the enemy to
play your game. Place them on the horns of a dilemma so that whatever choice
they make is to your advantage. Maximize your strengths and your enemies
weaknesses while at the same time reducing your weaknesses and their
strengths.
There are times when battles need not be fought at that certain time or
place and again, there are times when certain battles must be fought
regardless if everything is ready or not. Recognizing the difference is the
trick.
Other Hobbies: Kayaking, white water rafting, reading, and board wargaming.
Enjoys Most: Realizing the more your learn, the less you know. It allows you to time travel and experience the event outside the pages of the history books. It allows you to meet others with the same passion and create a close-knit community of gaming friends.

Favorite Quote: "Sometimes I think war is God's way of teaching us geography." - Paul Rodriguez
Command Style/Philosophy:
I actually haven't had much experience "commanding" in Kriegsspiel because
up until this point I've mostly umpired one on one games, but I do run two
businesses and I've directed several films, so let's talk about that!
I believe that it's important to lead leaders. In my experience it is
useless trying to lead people who have no initiative or vision of their own.
It will inevitably turn into a management game of pushing around piles of
stones unless the people you are commanding is ready and willing to give you
feedback.
It's important to be confident in your decisions, but it's also important to
know when to ask for advice. A good president needs a fantastic cabinet, so
to speak.
Fighting Style/Philosophy:
The war I've studied in the most detail is the American Civil War. So I feel
like I know a lot about how to get yourself into a fantastic mess.
I'm somewhat of a novice but my general game tends to be cautiously
aggressive. By default I probably tend to be overly defensive, but I feel
the most important resource in any undertaking is data. I especially feel
that it's important to know your enemy: his mindset, his resources and, by
extension, how he intends to utilize his resources.

Fighting Style/Philosophy: I prefer aggression and maneuver, I can defend pretty well, I am starting to learn defense and counter attack since I like to play weaker armies, for example, in the Napoleonic period, I like the Ottoman and Austrian Armies. I try very hard not to play Fr.

Favorite Quote: "I'd rather fight allies than be one."
Command Style/Philosophy: I generally prefer to delegate important orders to subordinates I consider competent, then promptly giving them an open, free hand to use the resources committed of their own will/desire. Those subordinates I think less than capable, I would attempt to keep a shorter leash in hopes of teaching them and better guiding them towards becoming better commanders over time.
Fighting Style/Philosophy: One of thorough reconnaissance combined with knowledge of the terrain and potential personalities involved on the enemy side of the battle. Without proper intelligence, an army is truly blind and no amount of skilled warriors within it will make the difference. Watching, observing and counter-acting an enemy's movements and their own intelligence efforts before the final, decisive blow is dealt is preferred while leaving a bit of flexibility for "audacious," unexpected attacks to keep the enemy guessing. As in poker, one must constantly change gears to avoid becoming predictable and easily-lead into developed traps set by one's opponents.

Command Style/Philosophy:
Orders should be released with a goal, the goal to give the lower command
their mission but allowing them to complete it within their command. To many
times I have heard of upper staff not letting the lower guys on the ground
out near the fight be more flexible with their orders to really complete the
task.
Keeping in contact and command is essential and giving enough flow and
flexibility to the command.
Fighting Style/Philosophy: I am an aggressive fighter, I win big or lose big. I agree that the man who stays in his fort loses, you must be on the attack to gain any significant advantage within the battlefield environment.

Our commanders have four ratings. Rank, Approval, Win/Loss and Performance. We calculate them as follows:
Rank
Rank denotes a commander's experience with our game. All new commanders start off as Colonels. Commanders accumulate Seniority Points at the conclusion of a battle as follows:
Seniority Points Gained
2 Lose as Sub-Commander
3 Lose as The Commander
3 Win as Sub-Commander
4 Win as The Commander
As players continue to fight battles, they accumulate additional points. A players Seniority Point Total determines his rank as follows:
Pts Rank
0 Colonel
2+ ¶ Brigadier General
4+ ¶¶ Major General
12+ ¶¶¶ Lieutenant General
18+ ¶¶¶¶ General
24+ ¶¶¶¶¶ General of the Army
Approval Ratings (AR)
This is a number from 1-10. Ten being highest. At the end of each battle, our readers rate each commander. The approval rating is the ongoing average of all these numbers.
Win/Loss Rating
A win or loss is only counted if you are the Army Commander in the battle. Subordinate Commanders W/L rating do not change at all after a battle.
Performance Rating (PR)
After a battle, the Army Commanders rate each of their subordinates with a number from 1-10. Ten being highest. The performance rating is the ongoing average of all these numbers.
